Plugin Architecture?

Something nobody’s actually asked me about is whether Dbasr’s going to have a plugin architecture. The answer is: yes, probably, but not in the 1.0 release.

Building a plugin-capable CMS is hard. Really hard. Part of the reason I haven’t actually launched Dbasr is because, for a year or so, I was trying to build it with the assumption that it would have plugin capability. It defeated my brain.

Ultimately, I think it’s necessary, of course. But I’d also like to launch 1.0 and see where the desire paths lie.

Right, no, that’s the idea. When an artist posts a show, they can choose to send the show’s metadata to any site (like iTunes or Dbasr) that can accept it. That includes geo info like address, city, state. So when you go to dbasr.com and tell it where you are, it spits out a list of nearby shows.

Well, that’s part of the point of using Dbasr; when the band posts a show, it gets sent to iTunes or Dbasr.com or both or whatever site they choose. It doesn’t have to send the show info on the day of the show, it sends it whenever the band posts it.

Josh more aimed at the geo-tagging aspect really, lets say I am stranded in Vegas for the night and have no idea which local bands are playing no iPad or laptop just my smartphone with GPS – an app registers my location and recommends gigs that night in my vicinity, and lo and behold a solitary limey walks into a bar in Whitecross to catch a Thursday set by RSS

Not to sure if this comes under the heading of Plug-ins but just thinking about the “shows” aspect of the site – what if the site pushes any gigs on or around the date to services like http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/happening-nearby-events-in/id346486345?mt=8# so that any event stands a chance of attracting “passing trade” so to speak (or alternatively feed into a “layer” on GoogleMaps?)

Yep a Dbasr multi-platform “Proximity Sensor” App would be nice but why re-invent the wheel?

Of course it would require the band to actually provide the meta data, but hey, you can’t do everything for them right?
